wouldn't it be nice for taxpayers to assume the majority risk in a venture that will grow my company... I wouldn't have to worry about giving up a few season tickets at the game, to fund such a cause.
by ms10/26/2011 9:14:19 PM
Build It, the CRL has not been approved, the ticket tax is supposed to cover a separate $125 million amount, not what the city still needs to borrow, and when did Katz ever state that he'd be putting in $165 million?
by Taras10/26/2011 9:14:38 PM
The arena was decided upon as soon as Katz threatened. No councilor wants the blame for losing the Oilers. This was shoved through with very little research or negotiation on the part of the city. Shame on council for being such puppets of the rich.

I am fairly certain the Ottawa owner funded the project on his own... as with all private business... he should.
by ms10/26/2011 9:16:29 PM
fairly certain? Does he still own the team? Sorry, I don't know all the details about it
by BUILD IT10/26/2011 9:17:08 PM
In Ottawa, Bryden secured funding to build the arena... The feds pitched a very small portion... and the province pitched money only to build a highway interchange to accomodate.
by ms10/26/2011 9:19:58 PM
Why should Katx have to foot the bill for the whole arena when the city os going to benefit. It isn't just the Oilers who will be using the arena. Concerts and other events will use the facility as well. The revenue from the arena will be used to benefit the city as a whole.
by Vanessa10/26/2011 9:20:20 PM
all in all the project was funded by the teams owner... of who later avoided bankrupcy... and sold the team... Looks like funding these arena's do have the capcity to create money pits... that people have trouble squandering out of.... I'm glad council is dragging me into this pit.

Nice job council, keep the ball rolling. Anyone opposed to this because they're not a sports fan is not thinking about the bigger picture. It will be a place you can go anytime and have a good time no matter what your interest is. If you're against this you need to get out more and support you're city. Stop complaining.
by Joe10/26/2011 9:23:26 PM
The City will be paying for the majority of this project while Katz will be receiving the majority of the profits. A sweetheart deal from a business perspective, a kick to the groin from a taxpayer perspective.
by Taras10/26/2011 9:24:00 PM
council explains that maintenance on the old rink will be 114M per year... perhpas they should remove their blinders (leave those on the horses by rexall).... and look at what will happen when maintenance contracts are re-nogotiated... after all according to them things are chaper right now.
by ms10/26/2011 9:24:21 PM
Joe... in all reality I have been a season ticket holder for over 20 years... but a business owner for 30... As a business man I am hoping the city gives me land and money to rebuild my business.... as my downtown building is getting old.
by ms10/26/2011 9:26:29 PM
MS, unless your business involves the Oilers, and unless you're a billionaire, I wouldn't hold my breath for any municipal funding.
by Taras10/26/2011 9:27:43 PM
I cannot wait for Rexall to bid on naming the new arena.... (of which Katz will collect all the profit from under the new agreement)... At which point he will write of the expense udner advertising.... Once again kicking taxpayers in the junk.

heard that tune before between owners and councils. the owners got enough money on naming rights to cover their committed costs to council. owneers ended up not having to put any of their money in
